Dax Shepard, like many other people, had a devastating year. After getting into an accident that required surgery, the actor relapsed on drugs.
He took to his podcast to let listeners know the challenges he faced earlier this year.
After suffering severe motorcycle-related injuries, Shepard received surgery and was prescribed Vicodin. After that, he sought out pills of his own and relapsed into addiction 15-years after beating it.
He ended up taking a high dose of Oxycontin and hiding it from both his wife, Kristen Bell, and podcasting partner Monica Padman. After accepting that he had a problem that needed to be addressed, he came clean to his life partner and his business partner.
Luckily, they couldn’t have been a better support system.
On a recent holiday episode of Armchair Expert podcast, Dax reflected on what saved his life.
‘I can’t imagine having to admit that to other people and feeling as safe as I did that you guys wouldn’t hate me. I hated me at that point and so, to be able to tell you guys and feel unconditionally loved and that I would be accepted was really special. It saved my life.’
Kristen also reflected on the challenging time and having Monica to lean on.
‘I would like to thank all parties involved because I am so appreciative of being able to go through every flavor of emotion with Monica and also to have you, the father of my children, be so able to be honest, even at your most shameful moments—is what saves you. Nobody saved you but you and your courage and boldness to say, ‘I feel like I’m slipping’ or ‘I did slip and I need to be honest before it gets worse’ and I’m just grateful to all parties involved. I think we did a really good job, team.’
Padman also showed that she was proud of her business partner by adding.
‘I feel really grateful and honored that you felt you could trust me. I feel grateful that I was allowed into the inner circle.’
