Gervonta Davis has been known for being a provocateur to try and throw their opponents off balance, both physically and mentally. Now he came after Ryan GarcĂa claiming that he is not even Mexican for not speaking Spanish.
At the promotional press conference for his fight against Ryan Garcia, reporters were quick to ask Gervonta Davis what message he wanted to send to his Mexican fans and he did not hesitate to respond.
"Support me, I'm going to fight for you. I love my Mexican fans," Gervonta responded nicely.
He also mentioned that he loved Mexican food, saying that "Tacos are definitely my favorite Mexican food," Davis added "I like street tacos. I think I need to eat a street taco right now."
And he took the opportunity to question the Mexican-ness of Ryan Garcia, who doesn't speak Spanish but understands it.
"Ryan, how can he consider himself Mexican if he doesn't speak any Spanish?" he asked reporters "He's not Mexican, really. He's from Los Angeles." Although Los Angeles is the second city with more Mexicans after Mexico City.
Does Ryan Garcia have Mexican ancestry?
Ryan Garcia was born in California. And is a second-generation Mexican-American as his parents, Henry and Lisa, were also born in the United States.
However, Henry is fluent in Spanish and claims that his parents are from Anahuac, Nuevo Leon. Henry has spoken out about the criticism of Ryan for not speaking Spanish.
"We are Mexican, my parents are from Nuevo Leon," Henry responds. "In boxing, they know he's Mexican. If he doesn't speak well, ok, what can we do. But in boxing, there is no language just punching, and that's how you talk in the ring."
Ryan Garcia has Mexico in his blood, however, has not developed a closeness to the country as other Mexican-American fighters like David Benavidez or Mikey Garcia who speak Spanish without because that was the 'home language'.
